Best Beaches & Surf Spots in Italy – Podcast Episode 18

In today’s podcast episode I chatted with Steve Brenner, co-owner of The Beehive in Rome, and surfer who describes himself as a surfer who never gets to surf.

If you want to learn about the best beaches and surf spots in Italy then don’t miss this episode. Steve lays out some of Italy‘s best surf spots, and explains exactly what kinds of waves you’ll be up against in each part of Italy and its islands, plus the best time of year to surf these locations.

We talked about some of the best beaches and surf spots in Italy near Rome and he mentioned Santa Marinella where his friend Sacha has a great surf school, WildZone.

Steve likes to surf in Santa Severa because you have a great view of the town’s castle as you surf. (Photo courtesy of Rome Private Guides)

Sperlonga is one of the best beaches in Italy that’s just an hour-plus from Rome. It’s delightful for swimming and occasional surfing. Serapo beach in nearby Gaeta is a great surf spot.

Italy has just short of 5,000 miles (close to 8,000 kilometers) of coastline, and over several dozen sizable islands (450 in total), the largest and most notable of these being Sicily and Sardinia. Umbria, where Steve lives, is the only region in all of Italy that’s landlocked.
When you visit Italy you probably gear yourself towards the fabulous food and wine, visits to historic monuments, churches and works of art.
But if you’re a beach fanatic, or a surfer, then be sure to also make this part your Italian journey. Although most people don’t immediately think of Italy when it comes to surfing there are many wonderful surf spots to enjoy. It helps if you have surf contacts to access great surf spots so do some research on the surf spots in Italy where you’ll be traveling.

Maybe you’re a beginner and want to learn to surf. Here are the top ten beginner surf camps in Italy.

Steve hasn’t been to Sardinia yet but says there are surfers who love the island and swear it’s a fabulous place to surf. Lots to enjoy in Sardinia in addition to surfing.
Check out this Sardinia surf guide.

Sicily also offers great beaches and surf spots.

Perhaps you won’t make it to the beach while you’re in Italy, but you love water! In this Rome Fountain Tour you’ll learn about the history of water in Rome and its fountains. Here’s information about the Trevi Fountain and its recent restoration.
