Procida Island: Your Guide to Italy’s 2022 Capital of Culture

Procida, a captivating gem among the Phlegrean Islands, is situated off the coast of Naples in southern Italy. Nestled between Cape Miseno and the island of Ischia, Procida, along with its tiny satellite island Vivara, forms a comune within the Metropolitan City of Naples in the Campania region. This island, part of the Campanian volcanic arc, shares a geological heritage tied to the Phlegraean Fields, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical charm. Procida’s jagged coastline, historic Terra Murata hill, and volcanic roots make it a must-visit destination that embodies the enchanting allure of southern Italy's coastal treasures.

Getting to the Island from Naples

Reaching Procida from Naples is straightforward and convenient. From the Naples train station, you can grab a fixed-price taxi to one of the ports in Naples. I recommend booking a ferry from the Molo Beverello port. Be cautious of taxi drivers who may try to charge more than the fixed rate of €13. From the airport, the fixed rate is €21. These rates are displayed in every taxi, so have exact change ready and only pay the fixed amount.

Ferry trips to Procida are frequent, with about 21 daily crossings. The two main ferry companies, Caremar and SNAV, each offer multiple trips daily, taking about 45 minutes to an hour. It's best to book in advance during high season. Note that vehicles are not allowed on Procida from April 6th to October 31st. Arriving by ferry offers a breathtaking view of the island’s pastel-colored houses lining the Marina Grande port, setting the stage for your island adventure.

    Exploring the Island's Enchanting Neighborhoods

    Marina Grande
The main port of Procida, Marina Grande, enchants visitors with its vibrant waterfront and historic charm. Fresh fish is sold directly from boats, and the area is a hub of activity with shops, bars, and restaurants lining Via Roma. Don’t miss the 12th-century Montefusco Palace, once a royal summer residence, and the Grotte beach with its historic caves.

    Marina Corricella
The oldest fishing village on Procida, Marina Corricella, offers a serene escape with its unique architecture of arches, domes, stairways, and colorful facades. Accessible only by sea or steep stairways, it provides stunning views and peaceful strolls. A favorite spot here is Bar Graziella, a popular filming location that adds a touch of cinematic charm to the experience.

    Semmarezio: The Martyrs Square
Connecting Corricella, Marina Grande, and Terra Murata, Martyrs' Square (Piazza dei Martiri) is a historical gem featuring the baroque Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Palazzo De Iorio. The pastel-colored houses offer a glimpse into Procida’s past, and the square's tragic history adds a layer of depth to its picturesque beauty.

Getting around Procida is easy and convenient, with several options to choose from.

    By Bus
The main bus station is near the port of Marina Grande. There are four bus lines with frequent service, and a 60-minute ticket costs €1.20 (€1.40 if purchased on the bus). Buses run until 3 AM in the summer and until 9 PM from October to May. Tickets can be purchased at the Caremar counter at the port or at any bar or tobacco shop.

    By Taxi
Traditional taxis and "micro taxis" (Piaggio Ape vehicles) are available at Marina Grande. Micro taxis are great for navigating narrow streets, and they can be rented for guided tours with stops at scenic overlooks and fishing villages.

    By Scooter
Scooter rentals are an easy way to explore Procida. Visit top beaches and cultural sites with ease. Rentals are available at the port and are a great way to avoid high-season traffic.

    A Glimpse into Procida's History

Procida's name derives from the Latin "Prochyta." This picturesque island has a storied past shaped by the eruptions of four now-dormant volcanoes. Archaeological evidence suggests Mycenaean Greek presence as early as the 16th to 15th centuries BC. Throughout history, Procida has transformed from a barren place to a luxurious retreat for Roman elites, fortified medieval villages, and a thriving fishing community.

In the 20th century, Procida adapted to industrial challenges and built Europe’s first underwater aqueduct in 1957. Today, it thrives with a blend of historical charm and modernity, celebrated as Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022.

Procida is a destination that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're exploring its enchanting neighborhoods, savoring fresh seafood, or enjoying a boat tour around the island, Procida promises an unforgettable experience. Plan your visit today and discover why this charming island was honored as Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022.
