If you're looking for a day trip from Rome out of the hustle and bustle of the city the Ninfa Gardens Day Trip from Rome is a wonderful choice! Here's what you need to know:
About the Ninfa Gardens
The Ninfa Gardens were nominated as one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe. They are located just south of Rome in Cisterna di Latina, an easy day trip from Rome. Most of the year the gardens are closed, but in the spring and summer months when the weather is beautiful it’s a magnificent place to visit. The gardens open in April and close in November for the winter.
The gardens are a mixture of beautiful plants and trees, walking paths, the lovely Ninfa River and its ancient stone bridges and foot bridges, all juxtaposed amongst stone ruins dating back centuries.
Who is Gelasio Caetani?
The Caetani noble family dates back to Roman times. The Caetani's were closely tied to the papacy with important holdings in Rome and Sermoneta, south of Rome.
Gelasio Caetani, like most of the Caetani family, was an intellectual. He was born in 1877 to the Duke of Sermoneta, and died in 1934 at age 57. Gelasio Caetani had close ties to the United States. He graduated from the Columbia University School of Mines, he dug gold in Idaho and then founded Caetani, Burch & Hershey in San Francisco. He was the Italian Ambassador to the United States beginning in 1922.
In 1921 he continued with the restoration of the Ninfa Gardens begun by his ancestors, and restored some of the buildings.
The small town of Ninfa was abandoned until the Caetani family took over the property in the 16th century. Before it fell to ruin Ninfa had over 150 houses, bridges, mills, several hospitals, religious buildings, and a 12th century castle just outside the town.
These gardens are cultivated where the ancient city of Ninfa once was. In 1921 Gelasio Caetani took the care and cultivation of the English-style gardens under his wing. The gardens spread out over eight hectares of land and have over a thousand different plants.
The gardens are a mixture of beautiful plants and trees, walking paths, the lovely Ninfa River and its ancient stone bridges and foot bridges, all juxtaposed amongst stone ruins dating back centuries.
